The Justice Department has decided not to prosecute former IRS executive Lois Lerner for stonewalling tea party applications for non-profit status, and two important House Republicans aren’t happy. The activities and inactivities at Justice are fueling Republican unhappiness with Attorney General Sessions, Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein, and Special Counsel Mueller.
Former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, author of an important North Korean proposal, exposes the over-the-top bias of an interview request sent him by a New York Times reporter regarding the proposal.
But the proclivities of the left press, universities, and leading foundations are eroding the most traditional and respected U.S. institution, its military, and Angelo Codevilla worries that Defense Secretary Mattis’s efforts to insulate the armed forced from ruling-class rot won’t be up to the task.
As though the U.S. citizenry didn’t have enough to worry about with hurricanes, political chaos and a corrupt ruling class, North Korean nuclear ICBMs, Trump’s pushing Pakistan toward China’s embrace, and Obama’s ceding the Mideast to Iran and Russia, along comes the revelation that the vital security information of half the U.S. population has been compromised by credit-rating firm Equifax. The clueless company isn’t even certain, a month later, how this happened. But corporations will continue to slack on vital software precautions until the penalties for such negligence lead swiftly to financial and legal ruin.
That there’s no justification for such incompetence in the software domain is underlined by the extraordinary recent advances in U.S. artificial intelligence and visual recognition software, which now can supposedly distinguish between gay and straight men 81% of the time and 74% for women. Although this is the sort of thing that ordinary people do all the time by just observing behavior and speech, now that software can manage the task the gay and LBGT communities are predictably upset.
Other scientific developments are not so controversial, such as the imminent demise of the successful Cassini spacecraft and the exciting potential of genetic engineering to assist in the terraforming of Mars or Venus.
