The revelation that Russians sowed Left-Right hatred on Facebook explodes the Democratic Party narrative of alleged Trump collusion with Russia during the presidential campaign. The Russian operatives, it is now apparent, were equal opportunity fomenters of hatred against both parties in the election. One Facebook account controlled by Russian operatives, Blacktivist, had four times the followers of the official Black Lives Matter Facebook account.
Blacktivist fostered race hatred, police hatred, and Antifas, all causes of the Democratic Party’s left wing.
Mueller probe biased
The new revelations explode any remaining justification for Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation, whose plainly partisan mandate is to focus only on alleged collusive benefit that President Trump received from Russia during the campaign.
The astonishing Facebook revelations as reported in today’s Wall Street Journal (paywall):
“Two accounts that Facebook…said appear to have ties to Russian operatives amassed more than half a million followers in the past couple of years with posts, ads and events that stoked strong emotions over issues including race and immigration….
“Blacktivist, an account that supported causes in the black community and used hashtags such as #BlackLivesMatter, frequently posted videos of police allegedly shooting unarmed black men. Secured Borders often railed against illegal immigration, publishing material such as a photoshopped image of a woman holding a sign that said “Give me more free shit!”…
“The issues they targeted spanned the U.S. political and social spectrum, including religion, race, immigration, gun rights and gay rights. Facebook said the accounts were created by Russian entities to exploit tensions among Americans and interfere with U.S. elections….
“Blacktivist had 411,000 followers, according to cached versions of the page, surpassing the official Black Lives Matter Facebook account by more than 100,000 users.”
The Russians spent hundreds of thousands of dollars for Facebook ads to promote the rage-inciting accounts. Twitter was similarly targeted.
Russian intelligence, and former KGB officer Vladimir Putin, are not newcomers to information subversion, which was widely practiced in Western Europe during the Cold War.
Trump legally justified in stopping Obamacare subsidies to insurers
President Trump’s announcement that he will terminate $7 bn. in government subsidies to Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) insurers is expected to be greeted with numerous court cases attempting to halt the move. But the President is believed to be on strong legal ground in halting the subsidies and certainly on stronger legal ground than President Obama was in issuing the subsidies in the first place.
Despite this, Democrats are seeking to transfer the blame for the collapse of the ACA on Republicans, even though it was proceeding before Trump took office.
Impeachment narrative promoted
Trump’s massive infusion of Scalia-type jurists into the Federal judiciary and his executive actions in the past two days to trigger reform of Obamacare have inspired the anti-Trump movement to step up its efforts to have Trump declared unfit for office and removed by impeachment or the 25th Amendment.
Earlier this morning, the American edition of the British Progressive newspaper The Guardian today had multiple front-page headlines pushing this angle.
The Hill reports that “Hustler Magazine founder Larry Flynt is reportedly offering a $10 million reward for information that could lead to the impeachment of President Trump.” Hustler is a pornographic publication, so this would fit nicely with the Democrats’ penchant for big-time funders of sterling moral character, such as Harvey Weinberg.
French reforms under Macron
“French President Emmanuel Macron is making good on his campaign promise to improve the business environment in France,” the Tax Foundation reports. Previous attempts at reform in France have been stymied by France’s powerful labor unions, but so far Macron is proceeding.
Right after the French elections, U.S. conservatives regarded Macron with disdain, given his strong pro-EU, anti-Brexit, pro-Merkel pronouncements. Some of the naysayers are now reconsidering.
Ballet and theater
Wall Street Journal theater critic Terry Teachout has two blog posts for the weekend:
- a 1973 film version of George Ballanchine’s ballet Duo Concertant, set to Igor Stravinsky’s startling piano-violin duet of that name,
- a review of two plays now playing in New York City.
